Feb 2nd - Feb 3rd: Day One

I was going to wait until right before bed to post this, but I already have a TON to write about. My goal is to write one new entry a day for the entire duration of my trip. Whether or not I keep up with it is another story.

I suppose my journey starts out Tuesday night. Ice was expected for our area and Dad decided it was best to go to Philly that night instead of the morning before my flight. So we did. The next morning we arrived at the airport only to discover my flight to JFK was cancelled. We quickly rescheduled a flight that left Philly and got a connecting flight in Paris before heading to Madrid. The only problem with that was we were stuck in the airport until around 6:30 when my new flight was to take off. Let me tell you, over five hours in an airport with nothing to do isn't how I would recommend spending the day.

I have to admit though, that despite the long wait, it was one of the best air-plain rides I've ever had. There were maybe only 40 people on a plain that was normally meant for 140. We all got the option to go where we wanted so we could spread out. I stayed where I was. The other thing that I simply LOVED was the TV monitors. They have one on the back of each chair so you can actually see your in-flight movie and such. The best part was that it was touch screen, and you could watch what ever you wanted; movies, TV shows, you name it. The flight from Paris to Madrid wasn't as spectacular. I ended up sleeping the whole way; I was exhausted (and still am).

I felt a rush of emotions as I landed in the Madrid airport. Part of me was relieved at finally making it and another part of me wanted to get the next flight home. Either way, I found my luggage, located the guy who was there to pick me up, and headed to the hotel (where I'm currently staying).

If I had to describe Madrid for those of you who have never been here I'd have to say it's a lot like New York. Except it's a LOT cleaner, a LOT safer (the only real crime is pick-pocketing), and a LOT prettier. I'm excited to be able to see the rest of the city but I have to admit I'm terrified to go out. I'm NOT a city person in any way shape or form. I'll get brave one of these days (probably Monday when classes start).

Well, now you all know what I've been up to these last few days.
Tomorrow I'm headed for a tour of the global campus and to meet everyone. After that I meet my host family and move in.

Wish me luck with everything!
I love and miss you all!

XOXO
Carol

  2. Im going to comment every day...cause Im cool like that.

Its amazing how every other country their cities are so clean and american cities looked like someone pooped on the sidewalk (which someone probably did). It was the same way it looked like a super clean philly with a lot less crime.

I miss you and have fun. Live it up! Do something crazy that I would do!

  3. Grams wants to know if Johnny was on the same flight as you were? We all loved reading about your first day! I got very emotional when you said you felt like grabbing the first flight home. Bob just yelled at me about blubbering and he misses you too as he started to tear up and walk away...lol...tough guy! Believe me I would love it however you better NOT even think about it until your journey is over. This is one of the most important and exciting things you will EVER experience. Don't let that BIG city intimidate you. You are a strong and brave girl and will survive getting around and when you conquer this you and your sister can take grams to NYC next year to see the ball drop! Love you lots and will keep posted. Mom, Grams, Bob and Chessa (who keeps checking your room out) and by the way Chessa found a jerky stash and asked me and Bob to give her some.

  4. Erikka: You made me tear up a little when I read that I'm only a click away! I miss you too and when I get back we NEED a dinner date.

Diana: I can't believe how clean the city is! The air actually feels/smells clean when you're outside. It's NOTHING like New York (but that's the best comparison I have...). Oh, and I will NOT be doing anything crazy. I'm leaving that all up to you!

Mom: I'm so glad you guys like this idea! I thought it would be an easy way to keep in touch since phone calls and texts are too expensive and since the times are just way off! And don't worry, I'm seeing this thing through. After today I feel a little more comfortable. It's going to take some getting used to, that's all.
